Applications of Neuromuscular Taping in Neurology

The use of Medical Taping Concept (MTC) / (Neuromuscular Taping-NMT) applications in neurological disorders is an emerging innovation in Southern Europe.
In countries, such as Italy Spain and Portugal, the use of MTC / NMT starts at an early stage in the treatment of neurological disorder, as it is fully compatible with any other manual techniques.
The concept stresses keeping the patients “mobilized” as opposed to “immobilization” per conventional techniques.
In addition, the technique stresses the importance of “decompression” when applying the technique in neurological disorders as opposed to “compression” when applied in sports injury.
Introduction
The applications of Neuromuscular Taping in neurological disorders follow different criteria, both in content and objectives related to conventional orthopedic treatment. Like any other technique, the practice should be used in combination with other techniques to obtain a desired clinical outcome.

DESTINATÁRIOS

Medical professionals working with patients with neurological disorders: Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Nurses and Medical Doctors (theoretical section recommended for medics no charge for attendence-45 minutes).

APRESENTAÇÃO

The applications of Neuromuscular Taping in neurological disorders follow different criteria, both in content and objectives related to conventional orthopedic treatment. Like any other technique, the practice should be used in combination with other techniques to obtain a desired clinical outcome.

OBJECTIVOS

The objective is to provide a practical tool for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses responsible for supporting the treatment of various neurological disorders. Therefore the course offers:
1.Instruction as to the proper taping technique for central or peripheral neurological damage.
2.Instruction on speciific treatment of spasticity; by correcting the alignment of the muscle segments in order to improve joint movement.
3.Instruction on use in patients with neurological disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Amyo-trophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and post stroke paralysis. (Assuming authorization by medical consultant.)

PROGRAMA

DAY 1 – 7.5 hours
– Review to Medical Taping Concept and overview of research to date. (45 minutes)

1.Specific applications in patients with Neurological problems:
– Direction
– Size
– Tension
– Application time

2.Technical specifications for the application of MTC in Neurological disorders:
– Applications in the treatment of spasticity
– Applications in the treatment of hypotonia

3.Actions of MTC:
– Stability
– Tone
– Relaxation
– Application for correction of postural changes in orthopedics

4.Conditions for facial treatment:
– Face and Neck
– Front area
– Periocular area

5.Applications for muscular treatment of the upper limb:
– Deltoids
– Trapeze
– Biceps
– Trícipetes
– Extensors of the wrist and fingers
– Wrist and finger flexors

Day 2 – 7.5 Hours
6.Applications for the muscular treatment of the lower limb:
– Buttocks
– Tensor of the fascia lata
– Psoas
– Quadriceps
– Gemini and soleus
– Anterior tibialis
– Extensors of the fingers

7.Applications for the treatment of muscular disorders of the trunk:
– Erectors of the trunk
– Recto-Abdominal muscle
– Abdominal Oblique
– Abdominal Transverse

8.Special segmental techniques for patients with neurological conditions:
– Dysphagia
– Drooling
– Dysarthria
– Constipation

During the course photographs and videos of real life cases of almost all clinical situations will be presented.

Important emphasis will be given to “decompression” caused by MTC /NMT, as the fulcrum of its use, instead of “compression”.
All taping material used will be EU Class I Medical Device registered.
